Why the iPhone Will/Won't Succeed

Reasons Why the iPhone Will Succeed

--The device is from Apple, whose reputation for coolness precedes it.
--The device's name has an "i" in front of it. At this point, Apple could put out an "iToast" and it would sell like mad.
--The buzz about the iPhone has reached self-perpetuating proportions. Pictures of Madonna supposedly carrying an iPhone caused a mini-frenzy on the Web, and I've heard everyone from 10-year-old girls to middle-aged professionals express a keen desire for the device (even if they're not really sure why they want one).
--It's truly distinctive. Everyone and their 8-year-old has a cell phone and an iPod these days, and even Blackberrys and their ilk are so yesterday. But if you can snag an iPhone--in all its touch-screen glory--early on, you'll be the envy of the hordes who couldn't.
--Looks and coolness aside, the iPhone promises to pack plenty of functionality, combining touch controls with phone, iPod, Web browsing and searching, and e-mail (all powered by some iteration of OS X).
--If Apple is to be believed, the device delivers a killer 8 hours of battery life.
--Enterprises may not put out the welcome mat for the iPhone, but IT pros I've talked to are expecting the device to come in through the back door, possibly paving the way for wider use of Apple technology in business (especially since IT pros themselves don't seem immune to the device's allure).
--No one, it seems, can get one early. (Someone asked me if I had any clout and could get one--yeah, right.)

What do you think? Is the iPhone your next smartphone of choice, or is the iPhone the Tickle Me Elmo of the gadget crowd?

It will sell bcoz it has an Ipod in it so simple fone comes as free!

Deb Donston :

rr: I don't necessarily want one myself (I was a latecomer to the iPod crowd and my cell phone is about as simple as simple can be) or think it *should* be popular, but my prediction is that it will be--wildly.

Who cares, some new technology will aways be coming out in a few months.

No surprises...

Screw you mac lover!

Amused :

Excellent argument Fred. Obviously a lot of thought (for you) went into it.

Dear Amused,
you made me laugh, at Fred :p

What's the point of this? Compelled to join all the other bloggers who added significantly to the ihype (every 9 seconds to ensure their post was first).

Tech blogging has become nothing except rehashing of rehashed rehash that is sure to include a side of rehash for those really interested in rehashed rehashing of rehashed information.

I would like something useful to read this weekend.

Webster Phreaky :

Reasons WHY the iPhone WILL BE A FLOP??

1) Spinning Beach Ball of Wait n Wait n Wait n Wait ... sound familiar Mac Droids?

2) Same reason that every Apple OS X or Application UPDATE crashes, clobbers, kills applications and hardware on a Mac! Proof? Just read macfixit.com or AppleDefects.com every day for a good laugh on Stevie Gods (Fred's laughin too)

Now, I'll be laughin my ass off at all your Apple Kool Aid Drinnkers puttin' another $500 in Stevie Jobs PRIVATE $60M JET'S fuel tank while he polutes the ATMOSPHERE! Some "Green" company. Green Peace is right.

TechNetPlus :

I have been using a Nokia N95 for work and people around me think it is a serious high tech business device while I can still have all the fun features as the iPhone, like movie and music player, games, GPS, internet, etc...
However, carrying the iPhone to work, somehow it would make me feel guilty...

dan :

Hey Webster Phreaky, learn how to spell. On another note, macs have low crash record than pc's. I used my bro-in-law's brand new vista notebook, opened Internet Explorer 7, and guess what, the blue screen of death....I'd rather have a spinning a beach ball than a blue screen of death. ...

TomT :

1.)The iPhone is tied to a fourth-rate carrier.

In my region, Cingular is dead last in J.D. Power Call Quality Satisfaction, and is also poorly rated in Customer Care Satisfaction and Billing Satisfaction.

2.) Not everyone is going to like a touch-screen interface.

3.) The iPhone's real world usability, quality, durability, battery life, etc., is completely unknown. In the real world, a cell phone has to do more than "look cool".

y2hh :

Dan,

I have a Vista machine for you to use, installed by someone who knows what they're doing, and I bet you couldn't crash it if you tried. Yes, that's me saying your brother-in-law is just a bad user, as are you. BTW, I'm using IE7 on Vista to post this...and no Blue Screens here, or ever for that matter, no matter what games or utilities I use. Why? Because I know what I'm doing.

Same goes for any device (Apple or otherwise) maintained by an educated user...it won't crash unless you install stupid applications and cause it too.

Learn to live by this: If the device you are using/like to use works for you, than use it, but if you use a device because Jobs or Gates tell you too, then you're just an idiot.

Elijah5791 :

Webster Freaky,

How is Apple's "spinning beachball" any different from Window's "somersaulting hourglass"? I fail to see a strong argument against the iphone here; especially, since the iphone will be a closed platform, and off limits to third-party applications, and the OS "bloat" effect.

Anyone who thinks iPhone will fail is just living in la-la-land, or just so hopelessly closeminded (addicted to Windows) that they cannot fathom that anyone (as in millions upon millions of people) actually LIKES Apple products. They can't stand that so many people find Apple's devices COOL, and TRENDY, and SWEET!!! Can anyone remember the last time that anything from Microsoft created anything approaching the frenzy and buzz of either the iPod or the iPhone? (Someone in the back yells "Zune". Audience bursts into laughter.)

The iphone does have it's limitations - true. But, so did the first iPods -- anyone remember the "a thousand songs in your pocket" slogan? Who would buy an MP3 player today that could only contain "one thousand songs"? No one, that's who. The point? Just like the iPod, the iPhone will evolve, and be refined, and improved.

Two or three years from now we may have a mobile device from Apple for Christmas with an 100gb harddrive, run the latest version of OSX, include a flashcard slot, 4G capability, push email, run a Parallels/VMWare solution for Windows apps, be open to third party development, have mobile GPS, include international capabilities, be available to any carrier, allow you to take and edit videos and upload to youtube or Google, include a 7 megapixel camera, come loaded with tons of new Google apps to compete with Windows, oh, and be twenty percent smaller, and at half the price of today's model. Sound possible? History says that it definitely is with Apple.

This phone is not evolutionary, it is quite plainly revolutionary. This single device has absolutely changed the game, and it's not even out yet. One thing is for sure: cell phones, as we have known them, are history. Welcome to the future.

IT_GUY :

As an IT professional, this device will be a nightmare.

As a consumer, I want one.

There is no doubt that this phone has alot of hype, and we will see soon enough if it will live up to all the talk. Somehow, I will not be surprised if this phone has software problems up the wazoo. It will be interesting to see how many people will actually purchase this device, especially considering that the rate plans for it are not even released yet.

At this point in time, when asked if this device will be a flop, I would say it has a 50/50 chance at living up to the hype...

IT Out

Poor Fred feels threatened!

I look forward to the release & all the other techno-gizmos that will spin off of it!

Thanks Apple for being a true leader in your field!

IS_GUY :

There are several reasons that the iPhone may not do well. Plans and coverage are two of them. I won't be changing my provider to get an iPhone any time soon, though I'm sure there are some that will. Another is, as Deb noted, "the device delivers a killer 8 hours of battery life". While this might be great for an MP3 player, it's terrible for a phone, and this device is a phone. Another thing, just because "Apple's devices COOL, and TRENDY, and SWEET", doesn't mean that they're making it on to my network.

freddy :

It's 8 hours or Talk Time for the phone. Stand-by time is much longer.

IS_GUY :

Apple has done their traditional "up to" rating on their battery life, harking back to their "up to twice as fast" advertising campaign. If you honestly expect to get 8 hours of talk time, you're going to be disappointed.

wuscus :

From a Security Professional, there are huge holes that exist and those issues will have to be resolved before it will go the corporate way...however, my 14y/o daughter has already placed her order. Eye-phone??? You can't even use your favorite song as ringtone! I-phone??? My @ss!

besides this, there are these:
"There's no way to cut, copy, or paste text!
Adobe Flash support is officially out. It's just not in the browser. Neither is there any other kind of embedded video support.
It will take snaps, but won't record video. How can Apple love YouTube as much as it does and not realize cellphone-shot movies make up a sizeable chunk of the crazy crap you find on there?
The mobile version of OS X or whatever it is the iPhone runs takes up 700MB of the device's capacity.
No A2DP support." - phonelosers.org (RBCP)

Big No to this overrated thing...

I use MS Windows, Red Hat Linux, SUSE, and Macs on a daily basis. I don't think a one of you in interested in which one is best, because I would have to ask the Socratic question, "what do you want to do with your computer?" Same with the phone. An iPhone is not for me because there are several Treo functions I need that it cannot replicate on the iPhone. For others it will be great. Will it be successful, Oh yes it will, just not in the enterprise. I am waiting for about version VI or V to be enterprise ready and on other networks. Until then, can the 12 year old logic and statements be droped while leting the market place make the decision (it will anyway).. nrk

Iphone, as all things to all people (assuming they have a lot of money) will lose out particularly because it is too many things draining the same battery;

Michael :

IS_Guy said, "Another thing, just because "Apple's devices COOL, and TRENDY, and SWEET", doesn't mean that they're making it on to my network."

"My network" must be referring to his home network, because surely he understands that the network he manages professionally is certainly not his.

It's a common fallacy in the IT universe.

Yet, significant progress has been made in the interests of technology users over the years, in spite of the incessant objections of arrogant IT types.

CIO :

Michael,

While I agree with you that many IT professionals are a little over-the-top, protective, and arrogant ... many of these feelings have been caused by uninformed users installing apps and attaching devices to the corporate network that compromise the security of the enterprise. And while it may not be "My Network", if something goes wrong that impacts the CEO's e-mail or internet connection, it most certainly is "My Fault" ... so yes, I am going to call it "My Network" and protect it as much as I can.

Okay, I wasn't going to comment since the iPhone isn't here yet really and no one's really gotten to test it so no one knows if the battery life is awesome or sucks, or if the touch screen is annoying or cool, etc, but I had to reply to this.

Seriously, please don't start this crap again. I have been hearing speculation about iPod killers for like 6 years, ever since Apple became big enough to hate just because other people liked it. Not one "iPod-killer" has even come close to the iPod's success. If the iPhone fails (which honestly seems unlikely), it won't be because some unknown device killed it when OMG everyone realized it had a longer battery life than the iPhone.

CIO :

The iPhone most definitely will succeed in one way or another (and success is such a relative term), simply because it has the "i" on the front and will piggyback on the success of the iPod. If anything will limit it's success, it's the fact that it will be strapped to one carrier. For that reason alone, it will not make it into our enterprise. Most corporations have corporate wireless contracts, and I can't see any corporation changing carriers in order to support one device or another.

BluntSage :

Like all hyped products, it's followers will over look all faults/limitations because they want one. That being said, 8 hours TALK time is still at the low end of the scale, and I don't believe standby time is even meaningful here because in trying to be all things the owner is going to constantly be trying to use it (or recharging it). Also, historically, touch screens have poor reliability records both functionally and from easy damage. Last point, since when is a small brick look 'cool and trendy' and nobody has ever discribed an ATM that way either just because it has a touch screen; just techo-viagra for those who need some real interests.

ToDieFor :

What I found interesting is that AT&T WILL NOT
be offering "phone insurance" for the iPhone...
After shelling out $600+tax & $100 a month for service fees, It's going to be fun to watch the complaints roll in when the phones get stolen or drops it in the comode, and then the owner finds out he/she will need to come up with an another $600 to replace the hardware ... what a great business plan on Apple's part!

Waxy :

Once all the others get on the bandwagon (and don't think for a minute that they won't)the i-phone will become passe - just like the cells and the Blackberrys. What next? Whatever it will be, others will come after, and that too will become passe.

bobo :

wow... aside from the real issues with the provider and not yet proven, it appears after 30 years it is still mostly mac vs. pc. Everything has faults, limitiations, features and differences. I remember when the blackberry wasn't going to be supported by major companies for the same reasons and that was not too many years ago.

techguy :

Oh please, Arrogance and Apple go together. Just like Hollywood and Lies. I don't care what the iPhone does, I would not touch it if it was free. Apple is well known for stonewalling any problems with their products. Look at all the MacBook Pro buyers that got shafted with overheating poorly designed laptops built in an old aluminum housing from the PowerBook days. The iPhone will have an impact like any other new idea, then fade to B movie status. After all it's about entertainment. I will watch my movies in my home theater, not on a 3.5" screen. Let the kids have them. I will enjoy my BlackBerry which is fast, reliable and saves me all kinds of time. Security is not an issue and it never crashes. A serious tool for profit making in the business sector.

DB :

My iPhone is great. Don't get me wrong. But, hands-down, the Nokia N95 is a more robust device -- when it comes to features. However, consumers should only get an iPhone if they are seeking a super-fast, super-responsive device that offers an exceptional user experience. I'm glad I traded my "old" smart phone for Apple's model.

Right now I still have a Ericsonn T39m!!!!! It still works, just. Funnily enough it won't sink with my computer anymore....a Powerbook G4, and it has alot of important stuff on it that I need to back up, so what I'm trying to say is, once the phone comes out over here (UK), and it's clear who the network is gonna be I would get one....After all I've used Apple products since 1998!
