Who Needs Videoconferencing? Use a Telectroscope
OK, maybe it's not the most efficient way to communicate between New York and London, but the contraption earns serious points for creativity.
Part art, part tech and part, well, a bit bizarre, a Telectroscope is presented as being basically a giant telescope with one end located near the Tower Bridge in London, the other in New York's Fulton Ferry Landing. It's said to be connected through a transatlantic tunnel. People walking by in either city can peer into the lens and see one another. During the unveiling of the Telectroscope, British creator Paul St. George even had enormous drill bits poking up from the ground in both locations, giving the illusion of an 11-foot hole that had bored its way across an ocean. Is this possible? Not exactly. The "tunnel" is actually a broadband network with HD cameras at both ends, courtesy of Tiscali, an Italian Internet provider. But the illusion seems quite impressive and will likely fool more than one bloke (or Yank, if you prefer) into believing its authenticity. The device's backstory is even more interesting. Read about it here. Any chance of getting one of these between the home office and, say, Snoop Dogg's tour bus? |
