Virtualization Management Makes a Step Forward

Everybody knows that managing virtualization is probably going to be a lot harder as we go along, which in turn has given birth to a small cottage industry of companies that are all promoting offerings that promise to make it easier to manage virtualization.
But most of those startup companies have been formed based on research created in university laboratory settings so it's nice to see the launch of a new company based on technologies that were developed in the proverbial IT trenches.
Credit Suisse has announced that its venture capital arm has funded the creation of a company called DynamicOps, which has created a set of tools for delivering and managing IT services across the three major--VMware, Microsoft and Citrx, virtualization stacks.
The company's Virtual Resource Management tools were developed as an outgrowth of Credit Suisse's s decision to embrace virtualization as far back as 2005, which means that the folks that developed these tools have been dealing with virtualization issues for the better part of three years now,
It remains to be seen if DynamicOps will have the marketing wherewithal to stand up to a host of rival startup companies and any number of existing vendors that plan to move into this category. On the plus side, DynamicOps has a platform neutral approach to virtualization that acknowledges the simple fact that IT organizations are not going to be able to standardize on one virtualization platform. Secondarily, the tools for provisioning servers and managing the lifecycle of a virtual machine have been rigorously tested inside Credit Suisse before being shipped out to customers.
On the down side, it's not clear that DynamicOps will be able to rise above all the noise in this market segment, which leaves some people wondering if Credit Suisse should have been faster on the draw given the fact that the company has seen these issues developing before most everybody else.
The good news at least for everybody else is that the quality of virtualization management tools is finally improving at a rapid rate as virtualization increasingly moves toward becoming a strategic imperative

Tim Johnson :

I have heard very good things about the product and the management team. It is the only product in its class that has a mature, customer driven feature set, and the Credit Suisse extensive use takes the risk out of it.

We are going to bring it in for some testing. Email me if you want feedback after we test it.

Tim
