Why Is New York Taking a Special Interest in AMD?

Let's get this out in the open. I'm a New Yorker, and my mom lives upstate where they don't have broadband (or much of anything else), so I'm happy that AMD is building a plant upstate because that means jobs, more tax revenues for the state, and maybe more money in the kitty so someone will offer broadband in the boonies where my mom lives.
But is it just me, or is it the littlest bit odd that New York State is investigating Intel's pricing policies? Or that N.Y. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is using almost the same language as AMD CEO Hector Ruiz has used in its ongoing legal jousts with Intel?
So let's recap the situation.

  • Spitzer's first year as governor of New York is tarnished by a mini-scandal that fellow Democrat Andrew Cuomo is compelled to investigate in order to appear impartial.
  • Spitzer emerges damaged but not unscathed.
  • Cuomo needs to make amends to his fellow Dem to ensure his own political future.
  • Spitzer needs good news; Cuomo needs to find a way to help Spitzer and also burnish his own prosecutorial credentials.

  • Intel? They're in Oregon, they're in Texas, they're in California. They're talking up a storm at CES. Word of advice to Paul Ottelini. You want New York to play ball with you? Open a $3 billion plant upstate, then we'll talk.
    Who said politics is dead?
