Timing is Everything

The world is ganging up on Microsoft to ruin its big day. Think it's all just a coincidence? Adobe just happened to take Air out of beta this week (taking the air out of Microsoft's Silverlight component of Visual Studio 2008)? Salesforce.com not only demonstrated its integration with Air, it specifically noted that it isn't interested in Silverlight. Now comes news that the EU has slapped (punched is more like it) Microsoft with a $1.35 billion fine, for failing to comply with its orders. Today. Microsoft had marked this date on the calendar for many, many months; the biggest enterprise launch date in its history. Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008 all being RTM'd on the same day. Some of its wounds are self-inflicted. The delay in including a hypervisor with Windows Server is just one of many missing pieces of the launch date puzzle, as Microsoft Watch editor Joe Wilcox pointed out earlier this morning. But you can't blame Microsoft if today it feels beseiged from all quarters. Maybe that's what made Robert Scoble want to cry. |
