Whither WinSafari? PC Users, Sound Off
There has been a minor tempest about how Apple decided to push out the Safari 3.1 (that is, the first non-beta version) update to Windows users. For more details, see John Gruber's summation--he's on top of it, as usual. But here's what I'm asking: Since I don't have a Windows machine at the moment, I'd like to hear responses to Safari 3.1 from all of you who do. What's your take on the install/update process? Is it running well for you? Does it act like a Windows application? If not, is the Safari way a better way for you? What are you using it for and why or why not? Feel free to e-mail responses or place them in comments. If we have enough responses, we'll do a follow-up. And Apple pays attention. |

At work I have an XP PC and have used Firefox for the last couple years. Today I installed Safari alongside FF 2 for my own testing. Installation was flawless and everything seems to work just fine. Seems much faster than FF 2. I'll probably test FF 3 once its officially released and then make my decision.
IE7 and IE8 aren't even in the running...
At home, I run Ubuntu so Safari is not an option. :-(

Safari is an OK browser: It displays all websites I visited good.
But it is a bad Windows citizen and a badly developed windows application. How can Apple say it's the fastest browser out there? It may be true for OS X but it is the SLOWEST browser of all the browsers I've tried on windows.
And have you tried keeping the app running for a while? The screen is not being repainted correctly after a while. Try this: Move another window on top of Safari and the klick on the Safari window again. On my screen half the Safari windows is black then. Minimizing the window and maximizing it again helps.
Why I use Safari? I develop web pages on windows and I have to test the look in Safari/on the iPhone and this is the fastest way to do this.

WinXP boxes, one desktop, one notebook. Since I set up my Apple update function to notify only, I did not really get it "pushed" out. I just closed the dialog which informed me it was available. So I don't see what all the complaining is about. If Windows users don't like even that minimal bit of intrusion, disable or remove Apple update. When I have the time to play with Safari, I will use the standalone installer. I am using Firefox and SeaMonkey at the moment. Some of my corporate web-apps which I access from home through VPN actually REQUIRE IE6, so I can't even try out IE7, let alone IE8 beta.
The HTML tag feature for posts STILL does not work.

While the push of Safari on unsuspecting users seems a little premature (witness the complaints about display issues) it works as advertised on my system.
Having said that, I miss being able to use extensions and the ability to automatically flush any personal identifyable info on quit, so I'll stick to Firefox.

I've noticed that after using Safari for awhile the resources in task manager gets huge. It was up to over 200,000k once. Every time I went to another web page it kept increasing, never decreased.
