Enterprise Mac: New Archival Solution
News Brief. Businesses have many reasons not to deploy Macs. Data archiving is one of them. |
Earlier today, Atempo announced what it claims to be the first "dedicated" data and e-mail archival solutions for Macs. Near as I can tell, the company has added Mac support to two existing software packages: Atempo Digital Archive (upgraded to v2 in March) and Digital Archive for Messaging (upgraded to v2 in May).
Whether for storage or compliance reasons, many businesses need to archive e-mail and files. Mac options have been limited. They still are. While the Digital Archive interface works in the Apple environment, the important server software requires Linux, Unix or Windows. However, Mac OS X is supported for the storage component. The Messaging solution supposedly is available for multiple operating systems; desktop support for Entourage 2008 is new.
New benefits and features:
- Data archival from Xserves
- Data access and management from a Mac OS X client
- Entourage access to data archived from Exchange Server
- Archived digital media content access from within Final Cut Server
From my perspective, the message archiving is perhaps the most important of the enhancements. Storage is increasingly cheap, and many enterprises have management solutions in place. But archiving is required by law, at least for public companies.
What Atempo offers is a messaging archival solution for Macs and Windows, through Exchange Server, and Microsoft e-mail clients.
