iTunes App Store Open for Business

News Brief. I just accidentally purchased Super Monkey Ball, so the App Store is live!

I had been snapping screenshots to accompany this post, starting about 5 minutes earlier. When I got to the application for the third screenshot, I noticed that the "Buy App" icon no longer appeared to be grayed out. So I clicked, and, uh-oh, I'm the proud owner of Super Monkey Ball for iPhone. What a monkey I am!

iTunes App Store

The iTunes App Store had been accessible from iTunes 7.7, which released overnight, but U.S. residents couldn't make purchases. Apple opened up the App Store for when the first iPhone 3Gs went on sale in New Zealand, around 8 a.m. EDT.

As of this posting, Apple hadn't yet made iPhone 2.0 available through iTunes 7.7. But AppleInsider reports that the update is available from this Apple link:

"If you download the software from the above link, you will need to manually tell iTunes to use the file that that you just downloaded, as iTunes will be unaware of its location on your hard drive. To do this, select your iPhone in iTunes to bring up the iPhone summary tab, then simply hold down the "option" key on your Mac or PC while selecting the "Check for Update" button. Then select the "iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw" file from your hard drive."

I downloaded the software but decided not to install. I need the phone for an 11:30 a.m. EDT briefing call with Microsoft.
