I've been catching up on my RSS feeds, for which I saved my favorite category, "People," for last. I subscribe to loads of blogs. My favorites are regular folks or unique individuals. Somehow Ian Rogers' FISTFULAYEN ended up in the "People" category.
Four days ago he blogged:
"In the back of a cab on the way home from LAX on Friday, I was living an iPhone commercial. I was watching Bad Brains Live @ CBGB's 1982 on my iPhone when Liz Heller called. While talking to Liz, Dave Conway was text messaging me about meeting me at my house to leech my FIOS. Suddenly my wife, Julie, calls. Going from being entertained to flipping around and conversating with three people in different ways all with this one slim little device was very post-modern. I was an embarassing caricature of myself, and I wish I could say that was unusual."
What it says: Ian has some semblance of a life. He's not living the couch potato existence. Will he trade up to a 3G iPhone (c`mon we all know it's coming next month) and more convergence?
If CBGB's still existed today, how different would be the mosh pit, with people holding up their phones to take pictures and videos (except for iPhone) of the band.
Yesterday, I put aside my iPhone to walk a different path of convergence. For the next few weeks anyway, I'll use the Nokia N95 8GB—that's the US 3G model. The Web experience isn't as slick as iPhone, but the N95 has a 5-megapixel camera and shoots great video. It's a journalist's dream gadget. With the N95, Ian's "post-modern" convergence would have included a video call with a fourth person.
I'm not abandoning iPhone (not just yet), but giving what I consider to be its best competitor a go-round of testing. So far, the N95 is a better phone, as in stronger reception, clearer audio and cleaner connection to a Bluetooth headset. With iPhone, I had reception problems in my apartment and scratchy audio, particularly with Apple's Bluetooth headset. I actually had to return two of the headsets for blurting white noise and nothing else; they were unusable.
As for convergence caricatures, ignoring the couch potatoes, aren't we all?
